Alastair joined Fipra as a Special Adviser in July 2010. Between 1973 and 1989, Alastair was an official of the European Commission. From 1973 to 1979, Alastair was a trade negotiator responsible for drafting and enforcing EC anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and safeguard legislation for the EC both within the GATT and with the Community’s trading partners in Eastern Europe, Asia and the Americas. Between 1979 and 1984, Alastair represented the European Commission in its Tokyo Delegation, with responsibility for EU-Japan relations on trade, industry, finance, agriculture and technology. On his return to Brussels, Alastair joined the Cabinet of Lord Cockfield, the UK Commission Vice President with responsibility for the Single Market. His career in the Commission ended as Head of Division for Financial Services in 1989 under Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan. From that time, Alastair has practiced the internal and external law of the EU Single Market, especially financial services, competition, state aids, corporate governance and economic crime and taxation in Brussels. Prior to joining Fipra Alastair was a partner in White & Case. Alastair has also lectured at University College London, Georgetown University, King’s College London, the University of Edinburgh Reykjavik University and published widely on European and international trade law.
Alastair was educated at Fairfield Grammar School, Bristol and at the Universities of Aberdeen (LL.B.) and London (LL.M.). He was called to the English Bar by Middle Temple in 1972. Between 1967 and 1973, Alastair taught public international and European law, as well as UK constitutional law, at University College London.
